This is what amounts to a public service message. Recently there was a lot of discussion about insurance coverage for tractors. I suspect that South Carolina is not much different (in this respect only) from most other states. Anyway, I knew that my tractor was covered under my homeowner's policy for theft (personal property coverage) and liability (if I run over someone) subject to my various limits/deductibles. However, I started to think about whether I had coverage if I rolled the tractor and destroyed it. I checked with USAA (my carrier) and found out that I did not because personal property coverage does not cover loss or damage to the personal property except for stated perils (which does not include accidental destruction/damage). Anyway, after being told that it could not be covered for that type of loss, they called back to say that I could get an endorsement to my homeowner's policy to cover (almost)all types of losses to personal property and this would include the (accidental) destruction of or damage to the tractor (subject to my personal property deductible) plus, it would cover all my other personal property at the same time (say you spilt a bottle of wine on a sofa and it ruined the sofa, this endorsement would cover replacement of the sofa whereas without the endorsement the policy would not cover it). The additional cost: $150. Thus, for an additional $150 I have purchased "collision coverage" for all my personal property, including the tractor (which includes damage to personal property on or off my property--e.g., transporting it to the dealer for repair when it falls off my trailer). There you have it.

Trying to understand what they told you and perhaps why, I can only GUESS as follows: You were asking the cost of liability insurance for (what they perceive as) a business or commercial operation. For instance, there's no doubt that when your lawn mower throws a blade and it hits your neighbor's little girl, your homeowner's liability coverage will provide protection. Just as when your cocker spaniel bites the neighbor. To send you to their general agent (which means to get a non-USAA policy) makes me suspect that they think you are engaged in (or are going to be engaged in) an activity the primary purpose of which is not to maintain your property and which is outside homeowner covered actvities. If I was going to use my tractor for (or partially for) a commercial purpose, I KNOW USAA would tell me to go elsewhere for coverage because they don't write commercial activity policies for the homeowner. ....

Yep, this is exactly what State Farm told me here in VT. The tractor would only be covered for "named perils" under the home owners policy. I had to spring for a $200+/yr policy that covers the tractor (and only the tractor) for other nasty things. Perhaps I should switch to USAA so that I can pick up the sofa too! ;-) ....

Frank put out good info on USAA policies. To reduce the confusion concerning USAA insurance and its coverage, USAA specific policies are only for military (previous, retired, etc.) and their dependents. USAA will recommend other companys but the rates will be different. It is my understanding that USAA is expanding its eligibility, but have not seen any indication that its specific policies would be available for the public. ....

No I specifically told them it was not a commercial venture, but that I mightremove the snow from my neighbors drivewa for free, but I wanted liability in case something happened there. Hence jobbed out to general agent, I even ;used the argument that when my neighbor was down with a broken foot and I mowed his lawn with my mower - result not covered.Lloyd ....

I pay $5.00 per thousand dollar value of the tractor for non commercial use as a rider on my home owners insurance. I really don't know how I am covered if I am mowing the neighbors or hauling it to the dealer but will find out. ....

Take a look at Lloyd's comment. He is correct--that is how USAA is interpreting their policy. I think that they're just wrong (I explained why I think so to Lloyd in an e-mail). Anyway, USAA uses the ISO (Insurance Services Offices) policy which is a standard form policy. There are some carriers like State Farm which use their own form but most use ISO. So, as a for what it's worth, a USAA policy will be a "standard" policy. It's my opinion that the way I have described the coverage, it covers for all non-commercial use but USAA disagrees. In effect, USAA is saying the following: Your neighbor goes away for a three week vacation. You decide to do him a favor and cut his grass with your riding lawn mower. USAA says that they interpret the ISO policy to read that your liability coverage ceased when you drove your lawn mower across your property line. They're full of it and would lose their rear ends if they denied coverage on that basis. The policy language just does not support that narrow an interpretation. ....
